Hello universe,
As is evident with previous posts I am a webtoon reader, and apart from Let’s Play, which should return in a few weeks, and UnOrdinary I have quite a few webtoon comics which I am head-over-heels for and I highly recommend them, heads-up there are some massive spoilers for all the Webtoons listed.
Also just a quick disclaimer, all the artwork and story-line references in this post belong to the original artists… Please don’t sue me, I am fabulously broke.
Without further ado, my current top 3 webtoons:
1. Rise from Ashes by Madeleine Rosca
I recently started this webtoon and I am already head-over-heals in love. After having woken up in the middle of a vast mansion Winter discovers that she is has entered the limbo between life and death.
Winter has no memory of who she was in her past life, all she knows is that the mansion she woke up in is safe and hers. Throughout countless centuries she has chased away visitors who would seek to take her home, and with the help of the occasional possessed bird, Winter has kept her mansion clean enough that someone could eat off the floor… if she let them in.

Everything changes when for Winter when she meets another ghost. Winter has never known another being like her so she is instantly trusting… Clearly she’s never watched any horror movies. The new-comer, who goes by the name Nox, brings not only oil stains to Winter’s home but also Wren.
Winters unbeknownst enemy Wren destroys her home in the re-capturing of Nox, and both paranormal past-humans are taken the Red Crow Headquarters, pretty much the ghost busters of the world.

“New chapter update on Rise From Ashes”, September 17th 2020
Wren is a Red Crow member, sworn to protect the living from the dead, by enslaving ghosts. And upon capturing Winter he now has her in his servitude. Everything in the Red Crow world is about to change and Winter is about to discover that she is far more powerful than anyone would ever have thought.
The art style in Rise from Ashes is more of a digital watercolour look compared to other series. The colours are mainly red and blue but while Madeleine Rosca’s style is simplistic and not overly detailed like other comics, it’s change in art style is relieving. The art suits the story with Winter’s ghost form represented as a trail of electric lines, the Red Crow uniforms are shaded spectacularly and the background is generally monocoloured, except for some exquisitely detailed scenes.

‘"Touching the void” a new Rise from Ashes chapter is up’. June 5th 2020
Rise from Ashes fits comfortably into it’s supernatural genre, and the characters in the story are easily lovable. If I were going to give Rise from Ashes a rating out of 10 I’s give it a 8.1, I love the storyline so far and the characters within and the watercolour style is really interesting in the design element, but little things like the detailing of the background and some speech/inner thought moments where I had to re-read over kind of dragged it down for me a little bit.
2. Refund High School – LICO
19 year old Aru has nothing she wants, she’s forced to study and be the perfect daughter for her parents. Everything changes for Aru when she gets hit by an oncoming car filled with giggly-screaming girls. Caught in the accident, Aru, Gunn (a gorgeous, self-obsessed skateboarding twat), the loveable idol-in-training Sehui, and the devil-reincarnate Mari are all sent to Refund High, a place where all different forms of beings spend three years completing high school after death in order to be reincarnated into any form they want, the only twist is that they have no memories about their past lives.

Ships are formed, sailed and sunk. Betrayal is around every corner while the students at Refund High sabotage their way to the top, some even going as far as to summon demons, yes demons. As the story goes on more and more is revealed about main characters and background characters, the story gets more and more addictive and more and more enjoyable.
I have only read about 40 episodes, but I can comfortably say that I’m going to read this one until the end, I want to see what Gunn is like after he gains back his memories, if Mook and Aru will sail away in a ship, and if Mari can change who she is.

“A Fresh Start!” April 4th 2019
LICO’s artstyle for Refund Hugh is a semi-realistic chibi style, with characters like Aru and Waxy (Above right) the Chibi-like style just accentuates their cuteness and makes the reader fall in love with them, and with characters like Mook and Gunn it’s far easier to fan-girl over them. This webtoon is a solid 8.6, with the story-line being constantly addictive and easy to read, there isn’t much about this comic that I would change, except maybe the fact that the ship between Aru and Gunn is a bit slow moving. The comic fits comfortably into the fantasy genre with everyone attending the school being dead.
3. Subzero – Junepurrr
I’ve been on the Subzero ban wagon for a while now, and like the other webtoons mentioned, I have a soft spot in my heart for it.
Clove is the last princess of the near-extinct dragon Cerulean Clan and she will do anything to keep her people safe, including marry her people’s sworn enemy; Prince Kyro of the Crimson Clan.
At their first meeting Kyro is everything that his rumors depict him as; rude, arrogant, self-absorbed and utterly gorgeous. But as time and their marriage goes on, Clove discovers that Kyro holds a great weight on his shoulders, the prince has been keeping secrets for the protection of his people, but after letting Clove in there is a great difference between the emperor-to-be and his rumors.

“This week on SZ Kyro has a new getup!”, August 25th 2020
Through the current empresses health, the general's stealthy betrayal and an assassination attempt on Clove, Kyro reveals his true feelings for the now empress in waiting.
As time goes on the two become more of a united front, and after some stolen kisses, arguments, more assassination attempts, the two finally get on with the story... took a while.

The story fits comfortably into the romance category, but apart from that it's a bit hard to follow sometimes, and can be too slow for my tastes. The art style is shiny and captivating and the speech is generally easy to read. If I were to give this comic a rating, I'd give it a 7.8, it is a good webtoon but after missing a few posts I've really lost the flow of the story.
Some other honourable mentions were; Cursed Princess Club by LambCat, Freaking Romance by Snailords, Midnight Poppy Land by Lilydusk, True Beauty by Yaongyi, and Age Matters by Enjelicious. If you want me to do another compilation of these webtoons let me know by mentioning it in the comments below.
That's about all for this week folks, sorry for posting late.
Stay foxy,
The Shadow Girl, Fading Out xx
